It can be two types
  • Acute kidney failure – ( AKI) – it is abrupt and potentially reversible
  • Chronic kidney disease – CKD – Slowly progressive deterioration of kidney function atleast over three months.

Kidney failure is usually diagnosed and evaluated by physician or nephrologist .

Role of surgical interventions
  • Acute kidney failure patients with obstructive causes who may benefit from DJ stenting or PCN insertion
  • Acute or chronic kidney failure patient with infections in urinary tract
  • Chronic kidney failure – Insertion of Peritoneal dialysis catheters, AV Fistula creation
  • End stage renal disease – Live or cadaver donated kidney transplant.
