Stones can be detected in the kidneys or ureters or urinary bladder and rarely urethra

Symptoms
  • Unilateral or bilateral abdominal flank pain
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Pain at testicles and tip of penis
  • Difficulty while passing urine
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Blood in urine (hematuria)
  • Detected by Ultrasound scan or CT scan
Treatment
  • Medications in the form of tablets and syrup to help in expulsion of stones.
Endourological procedures
URS
  • Thin metal scope is introduced through the urethra up to the point where stone is located in the ureter.
  • Stone is broken into fragments using energy source and cleared.
  • Done for ureteric stones
RIRS
  • Thin flexible scope is introduced into the urethra passed through the ureter into the kidney.
  • Stone is broken using LASER and cleared.
  • Done for stones in upper ureter and kidney
PCNL
  • Small cut is made in the back and scope is introduced directly into the kidney
  • Stone is broken using energy source and cleared.
  • Done for stones in kidney and upper ureter

After each of these procedures a small tube called DJ stent is placed to facilitate the passage of tiny stone fragments. It is removed after 2-3 weeks .

Cystolithotripsy
  • Thin scope is introduced into the urethra
  • Stone is broken into fragments using energy source and cleared.

Energy sources used for above procedures can be LASER or pneumatic energy
