It can occur due to infection , external injury ( road traffic accidents) internal injury ( catheters ) or idiopathic .

Urethal strictures

The narrowing of the urethra for short or long segment.

It can occur due to infection , external injury ( road traffic accidents) internal injury ( catheters ) or idiopathic.

Symptoms
  • Poor flow of urine
  • Straining while micturition
  • Painful/burning micturition
  • Retention of urine
  • Fever
Tests
  • Uroflowmetry
  • Retrograde urethrogram /micturating cystogram
Treatment
Visual internal urethrotomy

introducing a scope into the urethra and making small cuts in the stricture segment using thin blade or LASER

Urethroplasty

Incision is made on the perineum or scrotum and urethral stricture segment is either removed or cut open and repaired sometimes using a small piece taken from the inner lining of mouth.(Buccal mucosal graft – BMG )

After each of the above procedures ,catheter is placed for a variable duration decided on a case ot case basis . Choice of surgical procedure is decided by urologist based on the individual patients condition .
